(Photographer) has been actively involved in the photo community since the 1970s in her home state of Massachusetts.
Joan worked for 12 years as Assistant Curator of Photographs at the J Paul Getty Museum after an earlier career as a photojournalist for East-coast newspapers & magazines.
Since 1996 Joan’s been teaching full-time in LAUSD. Currently she teaches about 200 teens a day in 5 classes at Bell High, an urban public school in Southeast LA. One of the country’s largest high schools, 4 Latino communities (Bell, Maywood, Cudahy & Huntington Park) feed into Bell's 4600 population. At Bell Joan has pioneered several new programs for the school: Digital Photography, Experimental 2D Animation, & Advanced Placement Photography/2D Design.
She has been recognized with many awards including the 2007 Patron Saint of Photography.
